During the Logistic Support Analysis, the possible failures during in-service are identified (e.g. by the bottom-up Failure Modes and Effectivity analysis method, or top-down using Fault Tree Analysis). The faults are then defined and connected to the Breakdowns Structures of the Functions Structure DEX, the Physical Structure DEX (affectively forming a list of Fault modes for the weapon system), as well as to the rectifying tasks of the Task Method DEX. The focus is to prevent these failures prevent by adequate maintenance.

The business process for which the DEX provides information is summarized in the SysML activity diagram in Figure 1.
